Though a herniated disc can be felt in any region of the spine, it is commonly experienced in the lumbar or lowers back. A healthy lumbar serves as a shock absorber and will also flexibility. However, the disc may get damaged through breaking or bulging outward. When this happens, we say that one has a herniated disc. This condition is also known as a slipped or ruptured disc.
What causes a herniated disc?
One may have many questions as to what causes this problem. The truth of the matter is that the disc is susceptible to wear and tear due to age. It dries out when it loses the jelly-like fluid in it and also becomes less flexible.
The other reason why this problem arises is because of an injury that may occur inside the spine itself. The injury forces out the jell-like substance to come out of the cracks to the outside of the disc. When this happens, the disc bulges outwardly and that’s when we say that one has a herniated disc.
The disc causes havoc on the nerve root at the lower back .one will also become numb or develop weakness. The sciatic nerve is one of the commonly affected nerves. The pain radiates from the back, all the way to the buttocks, legs and the knees. This pain does not go beyond the knees.
It is not always that one experiences sciatic pain with a herniated disc. The pain may be absent but one will have a backache all the same. The legs get affected a lot when one has this condition. They become numb and one ends up with weak pair of legs.
Loss of bladder/bowel syndrome
The other common problem associated with this problem incontinence. The bladder is an affected in such a way that one is unable to pass urine well. The compression of the spine causes the pressure on the bladder. The same problem seems to also cause the inability to control the bowel. Patient’s o f this condition suffers from strained passing of stool.
If you have any of the symptoms as described above, you will need to do any of the followng:
Take a bed rest
A deserved bed rest will give you relief from the pain. However, you will need to take the rest only when the pain is intense. Otherwise, one should remain active in various exercises. It has been found that taking a prolonged rest when you have a problem in the back only makes things worse.
Heating pad, a warm shower or a heating wrap will do the trick in offering the relief that you need for your pain. The application of the heat pad should be made at intervals of between 2 and 3 hours.
Another viable alternative would be an ice pack. The ice pack numbs the pain and also helps to relax the muscles.
Get a therapist to help you make a series of exercises for your back.
Lastly, try using some medications to help relieve pain.
