Muscle pain is common because our bodies are made from muscles. Some are more painful than others. The rhomboid pain occurs in the rhomboid muscle and happens to be one of those painful ones. Those who suffer from this pain rarely point where the pain is emanating from.
The rhomboid muscle is located in the area between the upper back where the shoulder blades and the neck meet.
Use of the muscle
The rhomboid muscle plays an important in the movement of the shoulders and the arms. The pain is felt when one carries heavy objects .professional golfers experience this pain as a result of swing the golf club. The multiple fibres which make up the muscle may also get torn when working out in a gym. The twisting and sudden turns could cause the pain.
Pulling a muscle
One may also pull a muscle during movement, leading to severe rhomboid pain.
The other cause of the rhomboid pain is the rupture of the muscle. This rupture could be caused by many factors, such as injuries, movement during exercise or pressure on the muscle.
The compression of the muscle at the nerve area could result in the triangular shaped muscles. One should bear in mind the fact that the muscles are usually extra thin. Any compression force on them causes a lot of pain in them.
How will you know that you are suffering from the rhomboid pain?
Loss of movement and pain
One of the tell –tale signs is that one loses ability to move as the shoulder blades are affected. The pain is also intense, hence rendering one immobile.
It is common for swelling to occur after has suffered from this muscle problem. The swelling will persist for the time the rhomboid muscle is healing from the pain.
How to recover from rhomboid pain
For one to get quick relief from the rhomboid pain, rest is important. Your doctor will ask you to relax at home so that the sprained muscle is healed.
Avoid strenuous activities
Due to the presence of a tear in the muscle, one is advised not to engage in any physically demanding activity so that the tear is not aggravated. If one suffers more tearing in the muscle, the recovery may be hampered.
There are some medications which are taken to reduce pain in the rhombic muscle. One can take aspirin and ibuprofen to reduce the swelling. The work of aspirin is to thin blood and as a result, there is less pain.
Cold compress treatment
One can apply cold compress on the shoulder blades to calm the pain. An ice pack will come handy in relieving one from pain.
The patient should be asked to stretch the arm and move the shoulders so that the flexibility is restored. One can also interlace the fingers at the back while pushing them in a backward motion.
During recovery, one should avoid lifting heavy objects.
